As I’ve begun my run for Democratic City Councilman At-Large some people have asked me why I am running. Certainly, for me and my family, this is no small decision. For us, the commitment is real. I had to give up my job at LISC (the Local Initiatives Support Corporation), so we will survive largely on savings. But I believe without risk, there is no reward. Late last summer we had a family discussion about the idea of my running for City Council. After my daughter Zoey helped us to chart out the pros and cons, the family decided I should go for it. The time is right and my family is behind me and beside me 100%.

I got not one, but two endorsements from the City's leading papers! Today I received endorsements from both the Inquirer and Daily News. The Inquirer said that I “impress with steady substance [and have] a legion of admirers around the city based on my community and economic development work with the Local Initiatives Support Corp. and the City Commerce Department.” The Daily News said that I was part of a “slate has the best chance to produce good things for the city.” I"m incredibly excited to receive the endorsements of both papers and am grateful for the added momentum they give my campaign.
It's been a wild week on the campaign trail. I was endorsed yesterday by both Ballot for Change (Anne Dicker's PAC) and New Direction Philly (a new PAC headed by Alan Sandals). I signed the Fair and Clean Campaign pledge. A video profiling me by Eric Byler was released on
What a week! On Monday, April 23rd, I had a letter to the editor on public safety published in the Daily News. On Tuesday, April 24th I appeared in my capacity as President of Free Schuylkill River Park and made remarks (watch me speak at the event here) at the signing of a settlement agreement between CSX Railroad and Mayor John Street. This resulted in a quote of mine being picked up by the Evening Bulletin and my being mentioned in Ronnie Polaneczky's column on April 26th and the Daily News editorial on April 27th. Read them all on my media page! The latest endorsements I've picked up are from the the 1st Ward (South Philly), the 5th (CC East of Broad), the 8th Ward (CC west of Broad), the 9th (Chesnut Hill and Mt. Airy), and the 27th Ward (U City) Democratic Committees, the Haitian Clergy of Philadelphia and UNITE HERE! Local 274, and the South Philly Rainbow Coalition.
Just today (April 17), I learned that I was endorsed by Americans for Democratic Action, OutFront PAC and the Pentecostal Clergy Political Action Committee. I was also endorsed recently by Liberty City Democrats. The Ninth Ward is throwing its support behind me, as is Governor Ed Rendell. He said, "Andy was an important member of my team for the eight years I was mayor of Philadelphia. His work ethic, integrity and ability to get things done served all Philadelphians well."
I heartily endorse the Recycling Alliance of Philadelphia's Five Point Recycling Agenda for Philadelphia. I believe that, with the right plan and leadership of the recycling community, Philadelphia can provide a city-wide, incentive-based, weekly curbside recycling collection program that will again be a model for the rest of the nation.
Philly For Change endorsed me as part of the At-Large Slate. Philly For Change is 2,000-member grassroots political organization that fights for progressive public policy at the local, state and national levels.
Neighborhood Networks endorsed me as one of their five At-Large candidates. I'm honored to receive this endorsement and appreciate their kind words! They cited my "outstanding record of advocating for the growth of the small business sector in Philadelphia."
Many thanks to bloggers Albert Yee of Dragonballyee and RubyLegs of Phillyville who have endorsed me. I''ve also received the support of bloggers Matthew Shampine and Leo B. Fox
